Logging into WordPress Dashboard

To find your “Dashboard”, follow these simple directions:
Go to your website URL and add /wp-admin at the end of the URL.
E.g., http://www.mywebsite.com/wp-admin

A log-in box will appear.
1. Enter your administrative username and password
2. Click on “Log In”

Each time you login, you initially enter the Dashboard.

There are two views from Dashboard, first the Visit Site, this button will take you to what visitors to your site will see and second, the menu of options to the back office (working area.)

The tabs across the top, left to right: Dashboard (Home), Posts, Pages, Link Lists, Comments, are the tabs you will use the most. (See extended explanations of tabs below.)

The tabs Appearance, Plugins, Users, Tools, Settings, Gallery, Files & Media, Pretty Link, StatPress, Surveys, are the more advanced levels of the site management that most of our clients choose not to use.

This series of learning materials will not address the Advanced Levels. Please contact Impression Engineers at support@impressionengineers.com to work with the Advanced settings.

Edit Pages

Home takes you back to the Dashboard, Pages and Posts both have two options:
Add New (See Tutorial on Adding New Pages and Adding New Posts.
Or Edit. Click Edit to edit an existing page.
It opens to a menu of the current published, private and draft pages.

Pages

The Edit Pages menu shows all the pages on your website.
#1 are links to see ALL pages to edit, PUBLISHED, SCHEDULED, PENDING REVIEW, DRAFTS, PRIVATE. Clicking on each word will show only those pages. E.g., Published will show only the 59 published pages, see (59) next to the word Published in the screenshot below.

#2 is a search feature. #3 allows you to display search pages. #4 shows that the About the Author page is a draft. #5 is an example of a published page. #6 is private, and #8 is Password Protected.

#7 is an example of nested or hierarchy of pages. You can arrange your pages in hierarchies. The hierarchy begins at the Home page. All Tier 2 pages are also listed similar to the Home page. See #7 below, you could have an “Shopping Cart” page that has “Cancelled Order” as a nested page under it and “Checkout” is nested under “Cancelled Order.” The hierarchy is displayed with the “—“ before "Cancelled Order". There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages.

The Dashboard (by default) will look very similar to the image above:

The tabs across the top, left to right: Dashboard (Home), Posts, Pages, Link Lists, Comments are the tabs you will use the most. Please review Index of Guides for information specific to the tab.

Plus, from this page, you can see any recent activity on your site, any recent announcements and quick edits.

Advanced widgets, such as podPress and videoPress, are also available upon request.

Right Now – At a Glance

Below the title Dashboard are several boxes. This are of the dashboard highlights some on the widgets that add features to your site. The upper left box titled “Right Now” displays statistics on the use of posts, pages, categories, and tags, as well as, comments (total, approved, pending, and spam). Click on the number to proceed to the corresponding page. From this tool you can also access themes, widgets, and spam queue.

Recent Comments

Continuing down the left hand side, you will find the “Recent Comments” module. This feature can display up to 5 of your latest comments on the Dashboard.

Hover your mouse over the appropriate comment to allow additional links to appear. These links will allow you to Approve/Unapprove, Edit, Reply, Mark as Spam, or Delete a comment.

To reply to a comment directly from the Dashboard, When hovering over a comment, Click on the “Reply” link (Found to the right of “Unapprove” and “Edit”).

Incoming Links

Continuing down the left side of the page, you will come to the "Incoming Links" module. This dashboard widget queries Google Blog Search so that when another blog links to your site it will show up here.

Plugins

Further down the left side of the page is the “Plugins” feature. This dashboard widget shows new plugins (widgets). Please contact support@impressionengineers.com for details.

Scheduled Posts

Over in the upper right is the “Scheduled Posts” feature. Another handy feature available on your Impression Engineers system allows you to change the date and time of your post.
A post that is dated to publish on an upcoming date will show in this box.

To write a postdated post:
1. Write the post (Using “Blog Post” ‡ “Add New” found along the upper navigation bar)
2. In the Publish box (on the right of the post page you are writing), Click on the “Published on” (right-hand column under Status and Visibility options.)
3. Under “Published on”, Choose Edit
A window will open and allow you to move the date and time forward or backward.
4. Click OK.

Recent Drafts

Continuing down the right side of the dashboard, you will find the “Recent Drafts” module. This feature displays links to your most recent drafts. Drafts created using QuickPress will appear immediately.

To view ALL your drafted posts, Click on the “View all” button to the lower right of the listed drafts.

Posts Pending Review

Continue down the right side to find the “Posts Pending Review” feature. This is a list of the posts that are in draft format.

QuickPress

Further down the right side of the page is the “QuickPress” module. This is the fast and simple way to make new or edit posts from the Dashboard. You can include a title, body text, media files, and tags in the post. Once you have created your post you can either save it as a draft or publish it immediately.

If additional functions are necessary, use the tool “Blog Post” ‡ “Manage Post” or “Blog Post” ‡ “Add New” rather than QuickPress.

WordPress Development Blog

Found at the very bottom, on right of the Dashboard page is the “WordPress Development Blog” module. This feature will display a listing of the recent blog posts to the WordPress system.
